Pillars of Pride

Tyrimos was commissioned by the council and Curious Duke Gallery to create a new site specific piece on Whitecross Street, Islington. She chose to paint two pillars which elegantly frame a block of flats for the public. This is in line with her values towards public and street art; that it should be accessible to all, to enhance their lives and change public space positively.

She painted exotic plants to reference the Barbican Conservatory – a stone’s throw away from Coltash Court.

The pillars were hand-painted using oil paints and paintbrushes alone – the artist enjoys using traditional media for contemporary works and environments.

'Pillars of Pride' was created in July 2018, and is a permanent art installation and can be found on Whitecross Street, Coltash Court, EC1, London.

In the heart of Old Street, surrounded by tall buildings, this amazing piece of artwork makes you feel as though you’re in the tropics – it’s vibrant colours really brings life to a rather grey area – you almost get lost in its beauty, imagining you’re far away from any city. It really is a breath of fresh air that brightens up the area – outstanding!Joy Okadigbo, member of the local community

One of our favourite artists, Andrea Tyrimos, is a fine artist who is often found painting on the street. This time painting a couple of pillars of a social housing block, with a pattern of exotic flowers. Her piece will be the only permanent addition to the street from the 2018 festivalInspiring City

Artist Andrea Tyrimos has recreated the beauty of nature and brought beauty and elegance to the entrance of these flats.Tanya Nash (street art photographer)

I love the work Andrea has done on our building in Whitecross Street – the choice to paint colourful plant life brings character and vibrancy to the neighbourhood.Anthony Selwyn, Coltash Court resident
